Welcome to part two, where we look at maintaining physical health throughout the grieving process. Of course, signing up for a marathon isn’t at the top of anyone’s list after a death, but there are some things to keep in mind to ensure your physical health doesn’t suffer.
Walking
As we touched on in part one, walking is important. It uses every muscle in your body as well as your mind. Stretching your legs can help you keep on top of your health and help you sleep better.
Exercise
If you regularly exercise, try not to stop completely when you grieve. It’s a great way to release tension and boost your mental health. Swimming is a great relaxing activity (unless you are a competitive swimmer!) If you feel angry, you can even do some kickboxing.
Diet
You may have days where eating and preparing a meal is the last thing on your mind. Or you may fall into a habit of takeaways to make things easier. As hard as it may be, try to eat little and often and include fruit, vegetables, and protein where possible.
Hydration
Drink plenty of water. It is important to ensure you are hydrated. Self-care and the basic things can get pushed aside when you grieve, but drinking lots of water is always important. You could also try herbal teas, as some can help with things like relaxation, aches and tension.
Warning Signs of Poor Physical Health
If you notice any warning signs, such as ill health, new lumps and bumps, muscle pain or anything else, make sure you do not dismiss them. Contact your GP to discuss your symptoms.
Bad Habits
Alcohol, drugs, and takeaways may all be a temptation, but they will not help your health. Try to stay away from things that will cloud your judgment or make you feel sluggish. If you find yourself falling into bad habits that impact your health, you should talk to someone.
Sleep
Sleep is always important as it impacts your overall health. Try to get a minimum of seven hours of sleep every night and get a good routine. Avoid screens for an hour before you go to bed, and make sure your room is a comfortable and tranquil environment. If you find you have real issues with your sleep, then consult your GP.
