Sadly, we never know when our time is up, and this is true for everyone, regardless of age, wealth, or social status. Many famous people die suddenly, even at a young age. It is no surprise that we often see public disputes regarding celebrity estates after their death. Here, we look at some of the most public celebrity estate battles.
Prince
Prince died with no will in place back in 2016, which led to a long and layered legal battle. His estate was subject to intestacy rules, but he did not have a spouse or any children, resulting in numerous people attempting to claim they were his heirs. After six years and millions of dollars in legal costs, his estate was divided between his half-siblings.
Aretha Franklin
Aretha died without a will in 2018, or so it was believed. However, after a legal battle between her children began, their handwritten wills were found in her home. It was eventually ruled that the latter document, written in 2014, would be followed.
Jimi Hendrix
Hendrix passed away at the age of just 27 in 1970, and he had no will. A legal battle ensued, in which his father took control of the estate from his attorney. However, upon his father’s death, Jimi’s brother and sister engaged in a lengthy legal battle over who should inherit the estate and all song royalties.
Robin Williams
Robin Williams had a will and a trust, but his estate became the subject of a legal dispute between his widow, Susan Schneider-Williams, and his three children from previous marriages. The disagreement centred on the wording of his trust, specifically what constituted “memorabilia” and who was entitled to the personal belongings inside the home he shared with his wife.
George Michael
George sadly died at the end of 2016, and his will left most of his fortune to his father and sister, but did not include his long-term partner, Fadi Fawaz. This led to a lengthy legal battle. Fawaz claimed the estate, arguing that he was financially dependent on George Michael.
The Importance of Having a Valid Will
The above famous estate battles highlight the importance of having an up-to-date, valid will in place as an adult, especially if you have a large or complex estate. Clearly outlining your wishes in this legal document can save a wealth of stress, time and money for your loved ones after you have passed away.
