If you are thinking about getting a TEFL certification to teach English abroad, then the first thing you might be concerned about it is the cost involved in it.
TEFL Qualification
In order to teach English as a foreign language, you need to get your TEFL qualification. There are a number of different courses that you can choose from, and the prices vary as much as the courses do. Because of this, it can be difficult to know which course is suitable for your needs and how much you should be paying for it. But never fear, we’ve put together a list of the most common courses out there and what you can expect to pay for them.
Those in high regard
There are two types of highly regarded and intensive TEFL courses. CELTA, or Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults, and Trinity CertTESOL both run for a period of four weeks and are available both in the UK and abroad. As it is an intensive course, and available at specific locations, you may have to also include other expenses such as accommodation, travel, and food.
The base cost of these courses is about £1,000 and shouldn’t cost you any more than £2,000.
Online Courses
Online TEFL courses may not have quite the same level of prestige as CELTA and CertTESOL courses, but they do have two big advantages over the highly regarded courses. Firstly, studying online gives you a lot of flexibility. You don’t have to get everything done in just four weeks, you can do it at your own pace and fit it around your current job and other commitments that you may have.
Secondly, they cost between £150 and £300 on the whole, and so don’t hurt your wallet as much. Though they might not be as highly regarded as the CELTA and CertTESOL courses, as long as they are properly accredited and are provided by a reputable TEFL course provider, they will be accepted by potential employers around the globe. Combined Courses
Combined courses are one of the best options to help you get the most out of your TEFL course without breaking the bank and still maintaining most of the flexibility of the online courses. The classroom portion of combined courses typically takes place over a weekend and takes up two to three days. Sometimes they take place over two to three days during the week. This not only lets you fit in some vital classroom experience but still allows you to do the rest of the course in your own time.
Typically combined courses are a little more expensive than online courses starting at £250 and going up to £500. To find out more about our combined TEFL courses, click here.
Budget Courses
Finally, there are the budget TEFL courses that start at just £20. These types of courses are cheap for a reason and really should be avoided at all costs. If you are paying less than £150 for your TEFL qualification, then it is unlikely to be worth more than the paper that is printed on.
Cost of Legalisation
One final cost that you will need to take into account is the cost of legalising your TEFL certificate once you have been given a job. You can find out more about legalisation and how much it costs here.
